In 2001, DirectFund transferred eighty six thousand dollars (US) to assist in the founding of Bugando University College of Health Sciences (BUCHS), a fully accredited medical college within Bugando Hospital. To date, DirectFund has transferred more than one million dollars directly to the Hospital. These funds have been used for the purchase of medicines, pediatric cancer drugs, surgical supplies, beddings/linens, and foodstuffs.

The need for this medical college is evident. In most of the world, there is one doctor for every four hundred people. In sub-Saharan Africa, there is only one doctor for every 25,000 people and one dentist for every 300,000 people. Until recently, Bugando, an eight hundred bed hospital, usually had only fifteen fully trained doctors on staff to handle the emergency medical needs of some ten million people, half of them children. With your continued support, the above ratios are changing.
New York Weill Cornell Medical College provided training for three Tanzanian doctors who became the founding professors of BUCHS. Dr. Robert Mbelwa, Dr. Peter Rambau, and Dr. Stephen Mshana completed their training and returned to Tanzania to teach at the medical school. While the doctors were in the United States, DirectFund Board member, Hon. Willie Walker, provided lodging for them in his town home, on Manhattan Avenue in Harlem.

The tuition, per year, per student, is approximately 9,000 dollars (this may increase as the student body and staffing patterns increase). The good news is the government of Tanzania has agreed to pay half of this fee. The bad news is, the annual income of the Tanzanians is only one dollar per day. The students cannot afford to pay. They need your support.
In 2010, DirectFund was a recipient of a one hundred thousand dollar grant from the Long Island based nonprofit, Fund for the Poor, Inc. We are thankful for receiving this grant which was transferred in full to Bugando Hospital. The funds were used to feed the patients, students and staff during 2010.
Along with assisting in the construction of BUCHS and providing tuition for medical school students, DirectFund has furnished medical supplies, lifesaving equipment and capital resources to this essential facility. We need your support as we raise awareness of the needs of the Tanzanian people.
Will you help us show them they are not forgotten?
